India

"...and in India, did you see the Taj Mahal?"

There is in Noel Coward's ''Private Lives'' a scene in which the feelings of that core group find unforgettable expression. It comes when Elyot, not long back from India, is confronted unexpectedly with Amanda, his former wife. When asked about the Taj Mahal, he says that it has been ''unbelievable, a sort of dream.'' Not quite convinced, she says, ''It didn't look like a biscuit box, did it? I've always thought it might.''

In 1930, when Noel Coward was playing Elyot and Gertrude Lawrence was playing Amanda, that stopped the show. The audience wasn't laughing at Amanda, either. It was laughing with her. What a relief to hear someone say, on or off the stage, that they were sick and tired of hearing about the Taj Mahal!
